Understanding Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye is more than an irritation. It’s a pervasive disease that affects both men and women at all stages of life. Symptoms may vary, but if you are experiencing or have experienced dry, itching, or burning eyes, light sensitivity, blurry vision, watery eyes, or experience difficulty wearing contact lenses, you may be suffering from dry eye disease.
Dry eye disease is caused by one of two factors - Aqueous deficiency or Lipid deficiency. Tears are multi-layered, with each layer being responsible for an aspect of eye function and maintenance. A deficient layer causes an imbalance within the eyes' routine function. Once the deficient layer is identified, treatment is targeted to the specific layer at the root of the problem. Our dry eye disease clinic then provides the support necessary to manage dry eye disease without sacrifice.
Living with Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye disease will not control your life. We will work with you to create a treatment plan that fits who you are and allows you to get back to what you love to do. From severe to minor cases, we treat each patient with the utmost care. We understand how dry eye can impact your day to day life. Using screens becomes harder, being outside becomes a burden, and you are back to wearing frames because contacts hurt. Our opticians' experienced approach is the key to finding relief.
Treatments are not one size fits all. We understand that reality and offer a wide range of treatment options:
Artificial tears is an effective immediate response treatment that temporarily relieves symptoms by adding fluid to the eye.
Medication is used to help control inflammation and treat underlying health issues that may be contributing to the experience of dry eye disease
The iLUX® MGD Treatment System is an advanced technology used to treat patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD, which is a type of dry eye.
Tear Duct Plugs are a more extreme solution that forces tears to stay on the eye and provide lubrication rather than running away through the duct.
